It is a busy season with writing, web projects and an amazing array of outdoor adventures.

I’ll be posting links here from time on work occurring across the boards, including footnotes on social—which filters through my twitter feed on these pages, but mostly watch for my writing elsewhere, like on YubaNet.com.

Summer evening, cool breezes the press of warm sunshine, or a moon rising over Grass Valley—enjoy!

The best thing about talking to many people from different places is that all manner of things find their way into conversation, allowing me to discover what I know…sometimes my opinions have changed and I may not have quite caught up myself.

Case in point: I recently was discussing growth plans with a small manufacturer and taking a look at their structure, I saw they were really pushing their products out in a traditional way, with on the ground reps seeking just the right places to sell merchandise. Yes, they have social media, yes they have other marketing in place. After this examination and conversation I realized that I don’t see a future in ‘pushing’ products—so much points to ‘pulling’ buyers or prospects or clients to an organization. Of note also is that over the last decade I have witnessed the almost complete abandonment of on the ground sales forces, driven by lots of complex factors, but still concluding with the same simple reality.

Digital Media in Emerging Markets

UofW Master of Communication in Digital Media and SAL U lecturer Anita Verna Crofts brought the five-part Seattle Arts & Lectures Storyteller Uprising lecture series to  a close with a look at where the series began—examining global change—adding pragmatic measurements and adoption trends in emerging markets (BRIC: Brazil, Russia, India, China). Crofts investigates and instructs on new media adoption and appropriation in resource-poor environments, with a special eye to social tools being adopted for social change.

What it looks like? Certainly not like the US…..pay as you go phones, texting as a primary communication and banking made possible through localized merchant hubs and basic cell service.

The March 24, 2011 Twestival Seattle—Tweet, meet, give—was a super event, bringing together Social Media Club Seattle and the international Twestival 2011 for FareStart—all at Ray’s Boathouse in Seattle.

“Twestival is a single day, global movement which uses the power of social media to organize offline events that mobilize communities in support of local causes. Since 2009 over 200 cities have participated by hosting offline events raising close to $1.2 million for 137 causes; most notably education and clean water.” from Twestival.com

Twestival’s synergy combines forces, and captures $$ for non-profits along the way….everyone was going to attend regardless to socialize and network, so contributing to good in the process keeps the ‘social’ in social media.

…begins with the writer asking ‘who’s interests are being served?’

suggests Scott Macklin, UofW Masters of Communication in Digital Media (MCDM) faculty and SAL U lecturer. Seattle Arts & Lectures Storyteller Uprising series hit the heartnote with the fourth lecture in a five lecture series addressing the stories we tell, how we tell them and where digital media may shift the fabric of the story itself.

Macklin discussed ways that we can use new media and traditional storytelling to convene, begin dialogues, build trust and create meaning.

Seattle Social Media Club’s monthly meeting hosted at Microsoft’s Conference Center on December 8, 2010 in Redmond, Washington raised key questions for 2011 with panelists from non-profit, for profit and government organizations. This last post includes comments from Kathy Gill, who teaches at the University of Washington in the Department of Communication, Digital Media Program and Sean O’Driscoll, co-founder and CEO of Ant’s Eye View.

Final in a Series

There are numbers and there are numbers. Numbers are not be ignored, especially in emerging fields, like social media. The University of Washington’s Kathy Gill began by reminding listeners of some of the interesting numbers from recent stats. Lots of people are way deep into apps and app development, but as of now, only 21% of Americans are using smart phones. Nielson forecasts that 51% of Americans will have smart phones in 2011, a huge increase in user numbers. Kathy notes that it no real surprise that women are dominating the social media market, but currently more men have smart phones. Kathy suggests 2011 as a year to watch not only mobile shifts in critical mass, but that bandwidth delivery will become a key factor for commerce. Also, watch for more pressure for social media privacy protections, like the bill introduced by Senator Charles Schumer, NY last April.

Jeremy Bertrand, social media club seattle

Seattle Social Media Club’s monthly meeting hosted at Microsoft’s Conference Center on December 8, 2010 in Redmond, Washington raised key questions for 2011 with panelists from non-profit, for profit and government organizations.

Third in a Series

As the manager of one of the most progressive state transportation department websites, Jeremy Bertrand delivers Washington Department of Transportation information to  some 6 million residents through myriad channels. The integrated websites, blog, news and twitter accounts also relate to mobile apps, fed by complex traffic monitoring systems and 100s of traffic cameras.

As for 2011, Jeremy notes several interesting stats. First off, social marketing is driving about 10% of all web visits to WSDOT sites, a significant factor. Then there is the audience dynamic, which goes something like this: 75% of income generated today comes from baby boomers. Only 1 in 5 boomers are using social media. The challenge is one of customizing information, so it is right-matched for audience. An inferred dynamic is how to grow technology and information distribution while reaching all audiences, including late tech adopters.
